On behalf of the Consortium for Oceanographic Research & Education (CORE), the University of Washington announces the Orca Bowl, a Washington State regional competition of the 11th Annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl!

Patterned on the National Science Bowl, the National Ocean Sciences Bowl provides a forum for students who excel in math and science to receive national recognition for their diligence and talent while broadening their awareness and understanding of the oceans.

Who?

Motivated, high school students (grades 9-12) who excel in science and mathematics and have an interest in the oceans, and their teachers and coaches. All Washington State students are eligible to compete.

What?

Rapid-fire and problem-solving questions, one day competition.

  • social sciences, including economics, history & human interactions
  • ocean-related technology, including instrumentation, remote sensing & navigation

How?

High schools organize their own teams comprising five students (four players and one alternate) and a coach. Coaches receive a resource guide that includes suggested study materials and tips on preparing a winning team. Coaches also receive sample competition questions. The winning team will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the national competition to be held in April, 2008.
